Futuro Beach (Praia do Futuro) by Karim Aïnouz

Here’s a film I can’t quite get a grip on. One the one hand, I find it very frustrating, very unfulfilling because of how extremely little it gives the audience in terms of insight into the characters motivations. They remain mysterious.

But on the other hand, I find the film strangely alluring and it stayed on my mind for a long time after, prompting me to watch it again. And I found that it definitely gained a lot upon a second viewing. It’s still very mysterious, but I felt I could understand the three characters and the film better. Also, it’s a very beautiful film to look at, very slow, very quiet. That’s what drew me in, despite everything else.
